Seeing is believing
This unconventional location is the ideal spot for an urban park with a cutting-edge, modern twist.
From a neglected urban space under the Richmond/Adelaide overpasses to a valued and inviting public amenity.
The eastern – most section of the park, includes two basketball half courts, an extensive skatepark and flexible open space for programming or community events.
Lighting is a key feature of the park’s design. More than 50 overpass columns are colourfully lit using LED spotlights and create a variety of different illuminating effects throughout the space.
Mirage, the public artwork in Underpass Park is an installation of 57 octagonal mirrored stainless steel surfaces applied to the underside of the overpasses.
Drawing inspiration from the definition of a mirage as an optical illusion, each of the panels is slightly different in size and spacing to create a subtle sense of movement.
The uncovered portion of the park provides an opportunity to add much needed green space – where trees, grass and other plantings add a natural element to the park.
